FAQ

Mesothelioma: Pleural and Peritoneal

In all of it's forms, mesothelioma is rare, dangerous, and aggressive. The most common two types of mesothelioma are pleural and peritoneal, affecting the lining of the lungs and the abdomen respectively. This article looks at the differences between the two, along with providing a basic understanding of mesothelioma as an illness. This article also looks at relative frequency, along with similar and differing symptoms for the two forms of the illness. Cause and treatment of mesothelioma are not covered in this article, nor are the less common varieties.

Without an understanding of the basics of mesothelioma, going into specifics about pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma would be less useful. In general, mesothelioma is a malignant cancer which begins in the linings or mesothelium of various organs and systems of the body. There are symptoms that come with nearly every form of mesothelioma due to it's nature as a malignant cancer, including but not limited to pain, weight loss and lumps. Mesothelioma comes in a variety of types, depending on which part of the body's lining is afflicted, including the lungs(pleural), abdomen (peritoneal), genitals, and heart.

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form, and is associated with specific symptoms like cough and breathlessness. Pleural mesothelioma involves tumorous growths in the lining around the lungs, which spread, causing symptoms. The  characteristic symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are a feeling of breathlessness, chest pain beneath the ribs, and a painful cough. Pleural mesothelioma is malignant, so as it spreads it can cause more symptoms, including trouble swallowing, and pain in other parts of the body. Pleural mesothelioma accounts for 90% of male cases, and 74% of female cases.

When mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdomen or the internal organs housed within, it's referred to as peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma is significantly less common, making up less than 10 % of men's cases, and less than 25% of women's cases. The abdomen has 2 layers of lining, one which surrounds the abdominal cavity, the other surrounding the organs themselves, both of these can be afflicted. Peritoneal mesothelioma causes pain, gastro-intestinal difficulty and swelling, but can spread to other areas like pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma account for a vast majority of mesothelioma cases, and both are forms of malignant cancer. This cancer causes tumors to grow in the mesothelium, the lining around the abdomen and the lungs causing symptoms as they spread and grow. This article covered the basics of mesothelioma, along with going into specifics about pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma, their symptoms and relative frequency.
