FAQ

Basic Facts for Malignant Mesothelioma
For every million people in the world, 15 to 30 of them will be diagnosed with some form of mesothelioma each year. This aggressive cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos, a highly toxic mineral that has been used in everything from insulation to ship building, and more. When the tiny particles are inhaled or ingested they can set off a chain reaction within the body and decades later a person can develop mesothelioma.
The Latency Period of Mesothelioma
From the time a person is exposed to asbestos until the time he or she is diagnosed with mesothelioma it can be decades – or as many as 50 years. During this period of latency the person has no idea that eventually this aggressive cancer will one day start showing symptoms.
 The Four Types of Mesothelioma
Four basic types of mesothelioma have been identified:
•    Pleural, which attacks the lining of the lungs, is the most common (75% of cases are this type).
•    Peritoneal, which attacks the lining of the abdomen, is the next most common (20% of cases).
•    Pericardial, which is quite rare, attacks the lining surrounding the heart (Less than 5%).
•    Testicular, an extremely rare form, attacks the lining of the testes (fewer than 10 cases each year).
Diagnosing Mesothelioma
Once patients present symptoms of the disease, doctors may take a look any history of asbestos exposure which would put patients at elevated risks. Imaging such as CTs and PET scans can be used to see the extent of the disease, but biopsies are often used to definitely diagnose mesothelioma. Those biopsies can also look at the severity of the disease, and sometimes lymph nodes are removed for examination as well.
Determining a Prognosis
Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease and because many patients to do not experience symptoms severe enough to send them to a doctor until later stages of the disease, prognoses are often poor. Life expectancy depends on several components:
Age – Those patients who are younger than 50 years tend to have better prognoses because they tend to be in better overall health.
Gender – Females tend to have a longer latency period and experience a slightly smaller percentage of extremely aggressive cases. This could be a combination of the role estrogen plays with the development of tumors and the fact that women for many years were exposed to asbestos in a secondary platform, meaning their exposure wasn’t as significant.
Type – Pleural mesothelioma tends to have a slightly higher life expectancy, perhaps because the symptoms can be more obvious.
Stage – The stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis will greatly influence the prognosis. Those who are in stages III and IV tend to be too advanced for curative care, and treatment then focuses on providing pain relief.
