FAQ

Overview of Malignant Mesothelioma

Accounting for approximately 3,000 new cases in the United States each year, malignant mesothelioma might not be a very common cancer, but it is one with devastating effects and poor prognoses overall. Even though the first cases of the disease were noted decades before, it was not until 1964 that researchers found the definitive link between mesothelioma and asbestos. A highly toxic mineral, asbestos has been used for centuries in industrial settings, construction, shipyards, and more, as it continues to pose a health threat to those who inhale or ingest its tiny particles. The particles are so light that they can linger in the air, unseen, and even be carried on clothing, in the hair, and on skin, putting others at risk for secondary exposure.

Different Types of Mesothelioma

There are four different types of the disease, but one specific type, pleural mesothelioma, accounts for three-fourths of all cases. This type affects the protective lining of the lungs, gradually thickening it and preventing it from moving as needed. The second most prevalent type is peritoneal, which attacks the membranes in the abdomen and eventually damages the major organs of this region. The other two types, pericardial and testicular mesotheliomas, are extremely rare. Pericardial mesothelioma invades the lining surrounding the heart, and testicular attacks the lining of the testes.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

The symptoms of the disease depend upon the location in the body of the malignancy. When it strikes the lungs the patients usually report shortness of breath, a dry cough, blood in the sputum, chest pressure and pain, weight loss, and sometimes difficulty swallowing.
Mesothelioma of the abdomen can cause painful swelling, back aches, fever, fatigue, disruption in the intestines, and dramatic changes in bowel activity. Those who have pericardial mesothelioma generally report chest pain and a feeling of uneasiness (attributed to irregular heartbeats). Testicular mesothelioma presents with swelling in the groin and sometimes lumps that can be felt just below the skin.

Prognosis for Mesothelioma

Symptoms of mesothelioma often present after the disease is already in stages II, III, or even IV, meaning that the disease has progressed too far for a good outlook. Life expectancy after diagnosis generally ranges between 8 and 18 months, but some patients who catch the disease early and who are in good health otherwise can live up to 5 years or longer.

Treatments for Mesothelioma
The treatment plans depend heavily
on the stage at which the disease was diagnosed. Mesothelioma in stages I or II can respond well to surgery or a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Occasionally radiation is used, but it is not a viable option for pericardial or peritoneal mesothelioma because of the danger to the surrounding organs.
