FAQ

The Early Symptoms of Mesothelioma

The early symptoms of mesothelioma can be so mild that they might be dismissed by individuals as typical signs of aging. Malignant mesothelioma is most often diagnosed in people who are between 60 and 70 years of age, and other age related illnesses or changes in health can be seen as the causes for this disease. Nagging, annoying symptoms that can even appear months or years before a diagnosis eventually become severe enough that medical care is sought. Unfortunately, by this time the disease might already have progressed to stage III or IV, reducing the chances for successful treatment options to be available.

Symptoms

It is crucial that people who know they have a history of exposure to asbestos do not shrug off these early symptoms.  A feeling of fullness in the chest – Pleural mesothelioma, the most common type of this disease, affects the lining of the lungs. Fluid around the lungs can cause a feeling of pressure on the chest. Even if this is not severe pain, it can still be one of the earliest symptoms of the disease (and sometimes the first sign in the advanced stages as well). Pericardial mesothelioma might present as discomfort in the chest as well as the lining of the heart becomes less mobile.

Back and side pain and discomfort – Both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma can cause back or side pain. This can be the result of fluid building up around the lungs or a tumor growth within the abdomen that is causing pressure on the side or back.
Shortness of breath – This symptom can come from a deterioration of lung function as the membrane that surrounds the lungs works less and less efficiently. Sometimes cardiac issues, such as pericardial mesothelioma, can be felt as a shortness of breath or a “quickening” in the chest.

Upset stomach and loss of appetite – The initial symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can occasionally be misinterpreted as a stomach virus. Nausea, appetite loss, and a general feeling of unwell in the abdominal area are often the first signs of this type of the cancer.
The symptoms for mesothelioma are often quite mild and because the latency period can be extensive, the disease often goes undiagnosed until it is already in the later stages. It is not uncommon for 40 years to pass between the exposure of asbestos and the time when a patient is diagnosed. The earlier a person seeks medical advice for even the mildest symptoms, the better the prognosis will be for the disease, and the more treatment options doctors will be able to provide.
