FAQ

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Mesothelioma of the Abdomen

Mesothelioma is an illness that comes in a variety of forms, affecting different organs and body systems, with the lungs being most common, followed by the abdomen. Different organs effected lead to different symptoms, but all forms of mesothelioma are malignant cancers, characterized by aggressive spread throughout the body, and poor prognosis. This article focuses on peritoneal mesothelioma, beginning with an overview of the illness, then a review of symptoms, followed with a look at different types of peritoneal mesothelioma, along with relative frequency.

The first step to understanding peritoneal mesothelioma is to get a general overview of the illness, including mesothelioma, and the peritoneum. Mesothelioma is a form of malignant cancer which affects the mesothelium, the lining of various internal organs, it manifests in the form of tumors, and is frequently deadly. Being that mesothelioma is a cancer, it represents uncontrolled growth of cancer cells in the body, which grow in tumors, and become more dangerous the further they spread from their point of origin. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the peritoneum, which includes 2 parts, the visceral peritoneum covering the internal organs, and the parietal peritoneum, which is a sort of lining for the entire abdominal cavity.

Peritoneal mesothelioma comes with a variety of symptoms, some of which are symptoms that would show up in any form of  mesothelioma, while some are unique to this variety. A patient with peritoneal mesothelioma is likely to face symptoms due to fluid or mass in the abdomen, such as bowel obstruction, swelling, and pain. When the cancer spreads, it can cause a plethora of symptoms as it affects other body systems, including pain and swelling. Similar to other forms of mesothelioma, patients with the peritoneal variety are likely to experience otherwise unexplained weight loss known as cachexia.

The last step in understanding peritoneal mesothelioma is looking at it's specific varieties, along with it's relative prevalence. There are 2 common forms of peritoneal mesothelioma, dry and wet. Dry mesothelioma involves tiny, discrete bits of cancer, or one dominant mass, as opposed to widespread small nodules in wet mesothelioma. Like other forms of mesothelioma, the cause of peritoneal mesothelioma seems to be most linked to asbestos, though not everyone exposed develops the illness, suggesting a genetic susceptibility as well. Peritoneal mesothelioma is fairly uncommon, and makes up for only  8% of mesothelioma cases among men, and 24% among women, compared to 90 and 71 percent for pleural mesothelioma.

This article has been a brief overview of the 2nd most common form of mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the linings of either the organs of the abdomen, or the abdominal cavity itself, and is a malignant cancer which causes pain,  swelling, and gastro-intestinal problems. Peritoneal mesothelioma may be rare, but it is still dangerous, and worth knowing about.
