FAQ

Mesothelioma: The Basic Facts
A fairly rare type of cancer, mesothelioma is also unique in that it can strike in four distinct areas of the body: the lungs, the abdomen, the heart, or the testes. When mesothelioma does strike, it attacks the membrane that is supposed to protect the organ and provide lubrication necessary for easy and healthy internal movements, such as breathing. Some of the basic facts about mesothelioma are:

•    It is diagnosed each year in the US in between 2,000 to 3,000 people.
•    When it strikes the lungs, it affects the right lung more often than the left.
•    In 1964 scientists first confirmed the link between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma.
•    Millions of people around the world have histories of asbestos exposure, and many of them do not even realize it.
•    Smoking does not cause mesothelioma.

Four Types of the Disease
Besides the asbestos link, another thing that sets mesothelioma aside from other cancers is the fact that there are the four distinct locations in the body where the disease can begin, and each has its own symptoms and treatment options.  Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs and causes respiratory distress. As the membrane that surrounds the lungs thickens and becomes cancerous, patients might experience shortness of breath, chest pain, and back pain.  Peritoneal mesothelioma causes the lining surrounding the abdomen to function poorly and as the cancer spreads it can impact digestion, bowels, and more. Patients with this type of mesothelioma often experience upset stomachs, weight loss (even as their abdomens distend from fluid retention), and abdominal pain.  Pericardial mesothelioma affects the lining of the heart and inhibits healthy heart functions, and testicular mesothelioma affects the lining of the testes and can lead to painful swelling of the groin. Both of these types are extremely rare.

Treatments for the Disease
The types of treatments that doctors pursue depend upon:
•    The stage of the disease upon diagnosis
•    The location of the disease in the body
•    The health history (including exposure to asbestos) and age of the patient
•    The severity of the symptoms

In the best case scenarios, treatments such as surgery can be used to remove tumors and cancerous tissue and provide the best prognosis for a longer life span. When used in conjunction with chemotherapy, surgery is usually the best treatment available for all types of mesothelioma. Surgery can also be used to provide pain relief – when fluid collects surgeons can surgically drain excess fluid and relieve the growing pressure. Radiation is usually only warranted in limited cases for pleural and testicular mesotheliomas.
