FAQ

The Latency Period of Mesothelioma

Latency is defined as the time period from the exposure of the virus or contributing factor until the time when symptoms appear and a diagnosis is made. When it comes to malignant mesothelioma, this latency period typically lasts for anywhere from 20 to 50 years, making it a very challenging disease to predict and diagnose.

In 1964 a definitive link between exposure to asbestos and malignant mesothelioma was discovered. It is the exposure to asbestos, a highly toxic and naturally occurring mineral that can eventually lead to cancers of the lining of the lungs, abdomen, heart, and testicles. The latency period from the exposure to asbestos and the onset of symptoms and a diagnosis can be affected by several factors.

The extent of the exposure – Those who work(ed) in direct contact with asbestos or asbestos containing products are at increased risks for mesothelioma, and the latency period is usually shorter for more serious levels of exposure.

The severity of symptoms – Symptoms of mesothelioma often do not come on so quickly or severely during the first stages of the disease, making it even more difficult to diagnose. By the time symptoms do appear and a diagnosis is made, the disease might already be in the late stages when treatment is less favorable.

The location of the cancer – Some researchers have found that pleural mesothelioma, which occurs in the lining surrounding the lungs, has a slightly longer period of latency when compared to the other three types of the disease.

The gender of the patient – Studies have also shown that women tend to have a longer latency period with mesothelioma than compared to males – as much as 5 years longer. This is likely attributable to the fact that women historically have been exposed to asbestos in secondary measures and therefor experience lower levels of overall exposure (also shown to increase latency).

The chance that a latency period for mesothelioma will be shorter than 15 years is just 1 percent. These significant numbers when it comes to latency can impact the prognosis for patients diagnosed with the disease. Latency describes the time between exposure and diagnosis which means that every month counts, as it is not unlikely that accurate diagnoses won’t be made for 3 to 6 months. In a disease where the average life expectancy of someone with stage III mesothelioma is 13 months, that latent stage where the disease is growing but is asymptomatic is crucial. The sooner patients seek medical attention for their symptoms and receive correct diagnoses, the sooner treatment plans can be initiated.
