Surviving Mesothelioma: Hidden Challenges

Mesothelioma claims many lives, but not everyone with a mesothelioma diagnosis dies within the average 18 month window. There are some survivors, and for survivors of mesothelioma, there are new challenges. After having gone through months, if not years of radiation and chemotherapy, survivors have to scratch their heads at their luck, and then buckle down for the hard work of preventing relapses. For some survivors, there's a dark side as well, while a natural reaction to such lucky survival would be to rejoice, some survivors may feel lingering guilt. This article briefly goes over survival chances, relapse prevention, and dealing with the psychological aftermath of mesothelioma.

For someone who's suffered through months of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, it might not sit well to hear that they're lucky, but survivors of mesothelioma are part of a lucky few. Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer, and it's symptoms don't usually pop up in a suspicious way until it has progressed to the point of being nearly untreatable. Only between 5 and 10 percent of mesothelioma sufferers are likely to live 5 years after their diagnosis. The majority only survive between 4 and 18 months after they receive a diagnosis.

After having removed the final mesothelioma masses and testing negative for the illness, the battle to prevent relapse begins. Immediately following surgery, and for some time afterwards, radiation can be used as a preventative treatment, hoping to kill any remaining cancer cells and inhibit further growth. Chemotherapy can be used in the same way, or in combination with radiation therapy, but generally these treatments don't go on forever. Mesothelioma survivors can make  healthy lifestyle choices to reduce their chances of cancer relapse, and according to the American Cancer Society, a diet high in fruits, poultry, fish, whole grains and vegetables can reduce the chance of cancer returning.

Surviving an illness with a near-certainly fatal prognosis like mesothelioma can lead to a variety of feelings, including guilt, fear, and sorrow about harm to the body. Mesothelioma is a terrifying condition, and after having faced such grim odds, patients may feel guilty about having survived when so few others did. Joining a cancer support group may help some patients to allay their guilt about surviving by showing them a variety of different cancer experiences. For some patients, turning to the spiritual and recognizing they didn't have control of either getting mesothelioma, or the fact that they survived can help.

Making it through mesothelioma treatment is incredibly difficult, and requires a great deal of effort from any patient, since chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatments are harsh in order to effectively treat the cancer. After such a hard set of treatments, it can be difficult for any patient to think of themselves as lucky, but mesothelioma survivors have beaten tough odds. This article showed how lucky they are, along with some tips for relapse prevention and handling the psychological after-effect of surviving mesothelioma.
