FAQ

Mesothelioma: The Facts About this Asbestos Related Disease

The mesothelium is a membrane that protects various organs in the body, and malignant growths in these areas are known as mesothelioma. The danger of this particular cancer is that it prohibits the organs from freely moving as needed within the body, as the cancer thickens the lining and prevents contractions and expansions.

There are four different types of mesothelioma that can affect patients with this disease. The first and most common is pleural mesothelioma and this strikes the lining around the lungs. As many as three-fourths of all mesothelioma cases are this type. The next most common type is peritoneal mesothelioma and this strikes the lining around the abdomen, affecting as many as one-fifth of all those diagnosed with mesothelioma. The final two types are both extremely rare. The pericardial affects the heart and the testicular affects the testes.

How is Asbestos Related to Mesothelioma?

In 1964 researchers first confirmed the link between exposure to the naturally present yet toxic substance of asbestos and diagnoses of mesothelioma. Asbestos particles are microscopic, but when inhaled or ingested they can eventually lead to this cancerous condition. Even though evidence of the risks of asbestos has been established, it is still used to some degree in nations all over the world.

Who Gets Diagnosed with Mesothelioma?

One of the most intriguing and challenging aspects of diagnosing mesothelioma is the extensive latency period that exists with this disease. This means that a person exposed to heavy levels of asbestos in 1975 might not show symptoms of the disease until the year 2025. The heavier the levels of exposure, the shorter the latency period can be, but minimally it still averages at least 20 years.

Largely because the sources of asbestos are very industrialized in nature, males are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than females. The average age of a patient at the time of diagnosis is between 60 and 70 years. This is also strongly correlated to the latency period of the disease.

There is also a risk of secondary exposure to asbestos which can result in a future diagnosis of mesothelioma. Cases have been documented of industry, construction, and other workers being diagnosed with the disease, and members of their family having the same diagnosis as well. This can occur when the microscopic particles of asbestos are brought home from the job site on clothing, in the hair, and on the skin. These particles can then be inhaled or digested, accumulating the effects over time.
