FAQ

Mesothelioma – Additional Treatment Options

A diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma comes with many questions and considerations for treatment. One of the first things patients and doctors need to assess is the type of mesothelioma present in the body. Pleural mesothelioma is present in the membrane that surrounds the lungs. It is the most common of the four main types, and tends to mean that patients have more treatment options available. Surgery is usually the first choice, removing tissue, lymph nodes, or even a complete lung. Chemotherapy and radiation are sometimes used in addition to surgery. All three of these methods have the potential to reduce symptoms and prolong life expectancy.

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects approximately 20 percent of those with mesothelioma, and it is present in the membrane surrounding the abdomen. The main treatment options are more limited when compared with those available for treating pleural mesothelioma.

Pericardial mesothelioma is a rare form of the disease which attacks the protective lining of the heart. Surgery is only sometimes used to relieve the pain of associated symptoms. Chemotherapy and radiation have little effect and are not generally recommended.

Testicular mesothelioma is the rarest form of the disease. The standard treatment options are also limited, but surgery is sometimes used by aspirating the site and removing fluid or by removing lumps or the entire testicle. Radiation is used on a very limited basis to prevent new cancer cells from growing at the surgical site. Chemotherapy has not been shown to be a reasonable choice for this specific type of the disease.

Additional Options
All of the four main types of mesothelioma are difficult to treat for various reasons. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation can be used in some of the cases, but there are also additional treatment options which can help alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for the afflicted patient.

Acupuncture and massage therapy have both been used with some success at relieving the pain that is associated with this cancer. Some patients also seek chiropractic care which can help assist in keeping mobility to the highest level possible. Respiratory therapy can be especially helpful to patients who are diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, bringing pain relief which can also reduce anxiety. Other patients have experimented with dietary changes with some success, most often when treating peritoneal mesothelioma.
Homeopathic remedies can be beneficial in conjunction with other treatments as well.
Early detection is vitally important in the overall prognosis of the disease, but when things such as surgery and chemotherapy can be combined with comfort care measures such as massage and respiratory therapy, patients often do not have to suffer the severe symptoms quite as much.
