FAQ

Alternative Treatment Options for Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma treatment options depend heavily on several factors. First and foremost, the type of mesothelioma that exists contributes to choosing a treatment. Pleural mesothelioma that affects the lining of the lungs is considered to have the best prognosis because it has the most options for treatment. Peritoneal mesothelioma which affects the abdomen is the second most common type of the disease, and its overall treatment range is slightly less. The two rarest types, pericardial that affects the heart and testicular which affects the testes, have limited effective treatment options. Because the locations of all four of the types of mesothelioma can be so different, the treatment options widely vary as well.

Three of the most common types of treatment for mesothelioma include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Often more than one of these are chosen as treatment procedures in the hopes of not only containing or removing current growths, but in preventing the spread or reoccurrence of the disease. Surgery tends to be the most favorable option of treatment for all of these types, and each disease type will react differently to the surgical procedures.

Chemotherapy is a common component of treating pleural and even peritoneal mesothelioma, but it does not have a proven track record of success with pericardial or testicular mesothelioma. Radiation is limited in its success rates, and is not considered very safe for treating pericardial or peritoneal mesothelioma because of the close proximity to other vital organs.

Alternatives to Surgery, Chemotherapy, and Radiation

Sometimes the advanced stages of mesothelioma mean that the three most common types of treatment, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, will not be extremely effective. If pain relief and general palliative care are sought, patients sometimes look to alternative methods of treatment. The pain, swelling, and other symptoms of mesothelioma can sometimes be alleviated by other procedures that are not very invasive and have few (if any) negative side effects.

•    Acupuncture is an age old practice has been shown to provide palliative care benefits.
•    Massage therapy offers a gentle approach to palliative care and can relieve some of the physical side effects of the disease.
•    Dietary changes have shown to be effective in some patients at reducing symptoms and even extending survival rates.
•    Respiratory therapy is an option, especially for those suffering from pleural mesothelioma, to alleviate the symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath.
•    Chiropractic care can help alleviate pain and increase mobility in some patients.

While none of the alternative treatment methods have been shown to significantly affect overall prognoses, they have been reported to help patients live more comfortably with the disease. When used in conjunction with surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, patients can sometimes successfully address a wider range of symptoms.
