Mesothelioma: Early Detection Makes All the Difference

Mesothelioma is a cancer, and like most cancers, it spreads and worsens over time, which means early detection makes a big difference in patient prognosis. This article looks at how mesothelioma grows over time, why it's symptoms are so difficult to diagnose, and how dangerous it is in the later stages. Mesothelioma is a grim illness, but there is hope in knowing the risk factors, and modern treatments.

Mesothelioma is usually referred to as Malignant mesothelioma, because it grows over time, starting very small. For some their first exposure to asbestos from work or other activities may take place in their teens or twenties. Development of the illness is unlikely to occur until at least a decade later, with the growth of the cancer taking around ten years as well. Because the cancer grows so slowly, and tends to cause symptoms that can be viewed as parts of another illness, it is often discovered far too late for treatment to be effective.

A majority of mesothelioma symtptoms could be attributed to other illnesses, so early detection is difficult. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type, afflicting the lining of the lungs, and can cause symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, and painful cough from fluid. These symptoms could be ignored by some, or attributed to other respiratory problems. The second most common type of mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma afflicts the lining of the abdominal cavity, or the lining of the organs within the abdomen, causing pain, swelling, and gastro-intestinal troubles, which could be attributed to other illnesses as well. Some people have a tendency to ignore symptoms of illness so long as they aren't debilitating, hoping to look tough or avoid doctor's bills; with Mesothelioma, looking tough can be fatal.

Most cases of mesothelioma are detected late, due to the sneaky way the illness moves in, and in it's late stages, mesothelioma is incredibly dangerous. Of all mesothelioma cases, late stage IV mesothelioma is by far the most dangerous, usually patients have about 6 months to live after such a diagnosis is made.  Earlier stages show much better chances, with stage 1 mesothelioma showing a median of a 35 month life expectancy, including some survivors. Stage 1 mesothelioma is difficult to detect though, because it usually hasn't spread enough to cause major symptoms. The key to catching mesothelioma early is for those with risk factors like asbestos exposure to take preventative action against the illness, and get regular checkups from a physician.

Modern medicine lacks any treatments that can gently and reliably treat advanced stages of cancer, and given that mesothelioma strikes so slowly and quietly early detection is difficult. This article has provided an overview of the way mesothelioma grows slowly, with symptoms that may not be looked at until too late, when mesothelioma is too advanced for any hope of effective treatment.
