FAQ

What is the Prognosis and Treatment for Mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma affects the membranes that line organs and organ cavities. Depending upon which of the specific four types exists, treatment options vary greatly.
Pleural mesothelioma destroys the lining around the lungs, thickening it so that the necessary and rhythmic motions of contracting and expanding can’t occur. This is the most common type of mesothelioma, and researchers link this to the fact that asbestos, the cause of the disease, is often inhaled. Because approximately 75 percent of all cases of mesothelioma affect the lining of the lungs, the focus of treatment research has been based here.

Surgery is most often used as a first choice in treatment, and sometimes used in addition to chemotherapy. This is referred to as multimodal therapy, and has shown to significantly increase the rates of treatment success. Surgery is sometimes limited to removing affected portions, but can also be used to remove an entire lung. Radiation is occasionally used, but can be dangerous because of the close proximity of the lungs to other major organs.
Several factors influence the prognosis for those with pleural mesothelioma, including age, health history, and the staging of the disease upon diagnosis. In best case scenarios where surgery and chemotherapy can be used, doctors have seen patients with life expectancies as great as 5 years or more.

On average, though, life expectancy for someone diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma is not as positive. This is in part because by the time the symptoms appear and an accurate diagnosis is made, the cancer has often spread. The long latency of the disease also negatively affects prognosis, as patients can be without symptoms for 50 years, so by the time they are diagnosed they are well beyond 55 years of age and they are already dealing with other health concerns.

The second most common form of mesothelioma affects the abdomen (peritoneal), and usually has a lower life expectancy. Pain and swelling in the abdominal area are usually two of the symptoms that alert patients to a health issue. By this time the cancer is often spreading. Surgery is usually the first option to reduce pain and alleviate swelling. Sometimes portions of the peritoneal membrane can be removed. Chemotherapy is also occasionally used to accompany surgery, but radiation in this area is generally not considered to be a safe option.

The two remaining types of mesothelioma affect the heart (pericardial) and testes (testicular). Treatment for pericardial mesothelioma is very limited, and surgery is usually only available to alleviate discomfort from symptoms. Testicular mesothelioma can be treated with surgery to remove the growths or even entire testicles, and radiation is sometimes used to prevent regrowth of cancer cells. However, the prognosis for both these types of mesothelioma is quite poor, especially if the disease is diagnosed in a later stage.
