FAQ

Malignant Mesothelioma – Prognosis and Treatment
Mesothelioma is a cancer that results from the exposure to asbestos, an extraordinarily toxic mineral that has been used for decades in construction, mining, and various industries. The mesothelium is a lining that protects organs and provides them with lubrication that is needed for the subtle movements they make. Mesothelioma refers to the cancer that destroys this lining, and about 3,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in America.

Four types of this disease exist: pleural (affecting the lungs), peritoneal (affecting the abdomen), pericardial (affecting the heart), and testicular (affecting the testes). Of these four types, pleural mesothelioma is the most common and is estimated to cause 75% of all cases. Peritoneal is the second most common diagnosis of mesothelioma and is estimated to cause 20% of all cases. The remaining 5% of cases are split between the pericardial and the testicular types, of which the testicular types is the rarest.

Prognosis of Pleural Mesothelioma
The type of mesothelioma present can dramatically affect the prognosis for the patient. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common, has the greatest effective treatment options available, and is generally considered to be the type from which patients have the greatest life expectancy. Surgery is the most commonly used treatment option for this type, and chemotherapy can be used as well to minimize risks and symptoms. Those who are diagnosed with this form of the disease will have the most favorable outcomes if they are:

•    Younger than 55 years of age
•    Have experienced minimal exposure to asbestos
•    Are not smokers
•    Have no other health related problems

Prognosis of Peritoneal Mesothelioma
This form of the disease ravages the membrane of the abdominal cavity, causing pain, swelling, and loss of function of the organs of this region. Surgery is also typical the first treatment choice.

•    Portions of the abdominal membrane can be removed.
•    Surgery can reduce pain and swelling.
•    Chemotherapy and surgery can both be used in some instances.
•    Radiation is not considered safe for this region of the body.
•    As with pleural mesothelioma, the treatment options are more effective for those who are in good health, are younger than 55, and also have exhibited few outward symptoms.

Prognosis of Pericardial and Testicular Mesothelioma
These are the two rarest forms of the disease, and both typically have poor clinical outcomes. Life expectancy is limited, especially for pericardial mesothelioma. Because these are so rare, little clinical experience has been noted about possible treatment options.

•    Probably the most viable treatment option for pericardial mesothelioma is surgery, and that is used only to help alleviate severe symptoms without really affecting life expectancy.
•    Testicular mesothelioma can sometimes be treated with surgery, removing a portion of or an entire testicle. Radiation is very rarely used to supplement the surgical treatment.
