FAQ

Mesothelioma: Treatment Options
Malignant mesothelioma affects the membrane, known as the mesothelium, which protects such organ cavities that surround the lungs and abdomen. Four main types of the disease exist, based upon their location within the body.

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form and it affects the lining of the lungs. Peritoneal mesothelioma attacks the membrane around the abdomen, and is the next most common type of the cancer, responsible for 20 percent of all cases. The other two types of mesothelioma are very rare – pericardial affects the heart lining and testicular affects the membrane around the testes.

Treatment Options
There are several different treatment options from which doctors and patients can choose while fighting the effects and often dire prognoses of mesothelioma. There are three main types of treatments used most widely, and each has benefits and side effects. The most common type of treatment chosen for mesothelioma is surgery. It is sometimes initially used to diagnose the extent of the disease, through visualizing the tumors, staging the diseases, and sometimes removing lymph nodes to assess for metastasizing. With this option doctors often aim to remove as much, if not all, of the tumor as possible. It is the closest thing the medical community currently has to a curative measure. Surgery is also used as part of a palliative care approach when it is used to remove portions of cancerous tissue so that symptoms can be alleviated.

Often in conjunction with surgery, chemotherapy is used to destroy cancer cells in the body. One or more drugs are used that target the mesothelioma cells and it is the least invasive of the three major approaches. The negative side effects include the destruction of “good” cells, which can result in illness, fatigue, and other related symptoms.
When surgery is not an option or when alternative methods are being sought, radiation is another treatment option available to patients. Targeted radiation attempts to reduce or destroy tumors and leave surrounding tissue unharmed. However, radiation can be stressful on the major organs of the body.

Doctors will often use more than one of these approaches when treating mesothelioma, in what is known as a multimodal therapy approach. Surgery and chemotherapy or chemotherapy and radiation are typically the most common combinations of treatments. These can occur within the same time frame, or subsequently, depending upon the patient’s health and overall prognosis.

The approaches that physicians use when treating mesothelioma depend heavily on many influencing factors: age, health history, level of exposure to asbestos, staging of the disease, cell types of the disease, and the severity of symptoms. As with most cancers, the earlier the disease is recognized, the better the outcome can be for patients.
