FAQ

Asbestos: Mesothelioma and Other Conditions

Most people have heard about asbestos and mesothelioma, because exposure to it has been linked in a number of studies to the development of the disease. Mesothelioma gets most of the attention, because it's an aggressive, often deadly illness that kills every year. Mesothelioma may be the most deadly when it comes to asbestos related illnesses, but it's not the only one. This article looks at asbestos, what it is, and what it's used for. It follows that up with a brief examination of mesothelioma, the deadliest related affliction, and then moves on to look at the less common illnesses associated with mesothelioma. The less common illnesses associated with mesothelioma may be less deadly, but they still affect quality of life for many.

Asbestos is a mineral that most are at least a little familiar with due to it's use in insulation and connection to illnesses like mesothelioma. Asbestos refers to a number of similar minerals that form fibrous crystals and have industrial applications. Uses for asbestos are mostly related to insulation from heat and cold, though the material is well known as a flame-retardant as well. The fibrous crystals of mesothelioma have a tendency to get stuck in the lung when breathed in, and over a long period of time cause a variety of abnormalities, most famously mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is the most infamous of the illnesses associated with asbestos, and is a cancer that grows in a number of places throughout the body, causing symptoms. Mesothelioma is usually malignant, meaning that it grows, eventually spreading and creating new tumors through a process known as metastasis. Mesothelioma most frequently starts in the lining around the lungs; causing symptoms like breathlessness, pain, and coughing. Prognosis for mesothelioma is fairly grim, wherever it originates from, due mostly to late detection which makes surgery dangerous and difficult due to spread of the illness.

Exposure to asbestos is dangerous for a number of reasons outside of mesothelioma, including asbestosis, asbestos warts, and thickening of the pleura. Patients with asbestos exposure may suffer asbestosis, a condition in which asbestos builds up in the lungs causing symptoms like persistent wheezing. Human skin is sensitive to asbestos, and in some cases a patient may end up with asbestos warts, warts that develop when asbestos gets stuck in the skin, prompting the growth of calluses. Lastly, it's possible for patients to suffer through thickening of the pleura, tissue surrounding the lungs, in some cases leading to impairment of breathing.

Asbestos exposure causes harm to people. This is well established, most famously with mesothelioma, a deadly cancer. This article looked at asbestos, mesothelioma, and other illnesses related to show that in addition to robbing people of their lives, asbestos exposure can impact patients quality of life with asbestosis, asbestos warts, and pleural thickening.
