FAQ

What are the Treatment Options for Malignant Mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma, the result of exposure to the toxic mineral asbestos, affects people all around the world. Most often thought of in relation to industrial environments, asbestos is still used for many businesses, and people are still exposed to it through secondary exposure when the microscopic particles are transferred on clothing or skin and inhaled or ingested. The disease affects the protective lining around the lungs, heart, abdomen, or testes.

While there is no comprehensive cure for mesothelioma, there are still treatment options available to patients. The decision for which option(s) to use depends on several issues that can be unique to each patient.

•    Age – Those younger than 55 years tend to have better outcomes with treatment options.
•    Overall health – Those without other contributing health conditions and who don’t smoke tend to have better outcomes with treatment.
•    Specifics of the disease – The location and staging of the disease will affect which treatment options are selected.
•    Symptoms – Sometimes treatment options will be used in a palliative approach to alleviate the severity of the symptoms.
Three Types of Treatment
There are three main types of treatment used by doctors to treat patients with mesothelioma.
•    Surgery is typically the first approach to treating this cancer. Complete removal of the tumor offers the patient the closest thing to a cure. It can also be used along with chemotherapy or other treatments to minimize symptoms and improve the quality and quantity of life.
•    Chemotherapy treatment is the least invasive approach, but it can still dramatically improve a patient’s condition. The goal of chemotherapy is to kill the cancer cells so that a tumor can shrink, if not disappear. Perhaps one of the worst unintended effects of chemotherapy is that it also kills healthy cells in the body, which can make patients feel weak and even worse during treatment.
•    Radiation is a targeted approach that uses direct radiation to kill the cancer cells. Sometimes this approach is used when surgery is not a viable option. It has the benefit of targeting the cancer without targeting other healthy cells. It is not, however, without risk because of the stress it can put on other organs in the body.  Radiation can be a useful treatment option for reducing the symptoms a patient may be experiencing from a growing tumor.

When a combination of these treatments is used it is referred to as multimodal therapy. This type of approach has been seen to significantly improve the overall prognoses of patients with mesothelioma.
