FAQ

Treatment Options for Mesothelioma
Malignant mesothelioma affects people all around the world, and is caused by exposure to the toxic mineral asbestos. Asbestos use has not been and still is not always regulated and controlled for safety precautions. People are exposed in various ways, including working environments, but also from secondary exposure when the microscopic particles are transferred on clothing or skin and inhaled or ingested. From the time a person is exposed until the time symptoms are recognized it can be decades, making the disease even more challenging to diagnose.

There is currently no cure for this disease, but there are treatment options available to help increase life expectancy and minimize the severity of symptoms. Once a patient is diagnosed with mesothelioma, doctors can assess several factors that will influence the viability of treatments:

•    Age
•    Overall health
•    Location of the disease
•    Staging of the disease
•    Severity of the symptoms

Types of Treatment
Doctors have three main types of treatment options for malignant mesothelioma: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.  Each of these treatments has benefits and side effects, and the success of any of them depends heavily on the factors of each individual situation.
Surgery – Surgery is the most common treatment option used for mesothelioma. If the tumor is diagnosed early, perhaps because another reason brought the patient to the doctor and he or she was yet symptom-free, surgery can be an effective method to contain the disease and minimize the chances of the disease spreading in the body. Surgery is often the closest thing to a cure when it comes to mesothelioma, especially when the cancer is found early, and it is often used in conjunction with other treatments. Sometimes surgery is used to relieve significant symptoms of the disease and increase life expectancy, known as a palliative approach. Surgery is also used to remove and examine lymph nodes to check for spreading of the disease.

Chemotherapy – This treatment method can be the least invasive while still being quite effective at extending a patient’s life expectancy and reducing side effects of the cancer. It is commonly used in addition to surgery. Chemotherapy drugs are used to kill cells, hopefully shrinking the tumor size. However, the risk with any chemotherapy is that the drug will also kill healthy cells.

Radiation – This type of treatment applies radiation directly to the tumor site and is used with the intention of killing the cancerous cells, but not detrimentally affecting the rest of the body. This treatment option is sometimes used when surgery cannot be, and is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy. By reducing the size of the tumor, the intensity of symptoms can be reduced as well. Radiation, however, can cause stress on other organs in the body

While there is no single definitive cure for mesothelioma, using a combination of these treatment options can significantly improve the prognosis for an individual with the disease. The earlier the disease is found and the healthier the individual has been, the more likely that these options will have positive effects.
