FAQ

Malignant Mesothelioma: The Types, Symptoms, and Treatments
Every year in the Unites States between 2,000 and 3,000 new cases of malignant mesothelioma are diagnosed. This disease is caused by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in manufacturing, construction, and more for decades. This toxic substance can be inhaled or ingested, and then result in cancer as many as 50 years later. This long latency period, combined with various and seemingly unrelated types of the disease, and often a mild onset of symptoms can make treatment options more limited.

Pleural Mesothelioma
This form of the disease is responsible for about 75% of all cases. It occurs when the asbestos exposure leads to cancer of the protective lining of the lung. Without a healthy lining, the lungs cannot move as freely or as easily. As the disease progresses it causes a thickening of the membrane around the lungs and impedes breathing.

This form of mesothelioma often leads to the following symptoms:

•    A feeling of fullness in the chest
•    Chest pain
•    Back pain
•    Difficult breathing
•    Fatigue and weight loss

These symptoms can come on gradually and be quite mild at first, so they make accurate diagnosing more difficult. By the time a person goes to the doctor for this disease, the mesothelioma has often reached at least the second stage (out of four) of the cancer.
Treatment for pleural mesothelioma usually consists of a two-pronged attack – surgery to remove cancerous tissue and chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. Only sometimes is radiation used, and only in minimal locations. As this form of the disease progresses surgery can be used to relieve painful pressure on the chest and ease breathing.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Making up approximately 20% of the cases, peritoneal mesothelioma affects the membranes that protect the abdomen. As tumors grow and spread in this area, many different organs and bodily functions can be dramatically affected. The symptoms for this form of the disease include:

•    Swelling in the abdomen
•    Pain and tenderness in the abdomen
•    Changes in bowel activity – diarrhea, constipation, etc.
•    Bowel obstructions
•    Nausea, vomiting, and weight loss

Peritoneal mesothelioma responds best to surgical interventions, and chemotherapy can be used occasionally. Radiation is not an option because there are too many sensitive tissues and organs in this area to make it a safe choice. Sometimes surgery is used to remove cancerous portions of the membrane, and sometimes it is used to drain excess fluid or relieve a bowel obstruction.

Pericardial Mesothelioma
This type of the disease makes up less than 5% of the cases, meaning that there is also little clinical support for defining classic symptoms and finding effective treatments. The most common symptoms of the disease include chest pain and heartbeat fluctuations, which can lead to a feeling of anxiety. Radiation is not an option for treatment, and chemotherapy has not proven to be effective as of yet. Surgery is sometimes used to remove damaged portions of the membrane.

Testicular Mesothelioma
This extraordinarily rare form of the disease occurs in the testes and usually shows few symptoms until the disease has already progressed. These symptoms include swelling of the scrotum or a lump on a testicle. Surgery and radiation are the only known treatments.
