FAQ

Mesothelioma – The Diagnosis

Mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, can cause mild symptoms before a person ever suspects anything is wrong. Some of the more subtle symptoms of the disease include:

•    A persistent, dry cough
•    A feeling of pressure on the chest area
•    Fatigue
•    Shortness of breath
•    Swelling near the site of the cancer

These non-specific symptoms can grow with intensity and persist over time. Because most people who are diagnosed with the disease are older than 60 years of age when they first experience symptoms, they might not realize that the symptoms are from anything more significant than age-related health problems.  One of the most important factors in accurately diagnosing mesothelioma before it is too late is to make sure that doctors are aware of any history of exposure to asbestos. Even without outward symptoms physicians can monitor those individuals very closely to catch the first signs of a problem.
If a physician suspects mesothelioma or a similar condition there are several tests that can be used to confirm the disease.

Blood tests that look for tumor markers – Some types of mesothelioma can be detected with a blood test even before the tumor has grown to a size or significance that causes symptoms. While this is not a definitive tool for staging or location, it can give doctors direction.

CAT scans – Similar to an x-ray, CAT scans can be used to better visualize the area suspected of having mesothelioma. Since the disease causes thickening of protective membranes, the scans can be used to look for abnormal thickening. Contrast dyes are also sometimes used to better visualize the cancer growth.

MRIs – Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an effective tool for doctors because it can show fairly accurately where the tumors have grown in the body.

PET scan – PET scans are commonly used to assess staging of cancers, and it can help show even very small growths.

Biopsies – These are very common in many types of cancers, and there are different specific types of biopsies that can be performed depending on the type of mesothelioma that is present or suspected. Both fluid and tissue samples can be taken, and some biopsies allow for a tiny camera to be inserted through the tube being used. This can further show details about the cancer growth.

The earlier the disease is found, the better the prognosis will be for the patient. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, respiratory therapy, and other options exist to help improve life expectancy and alleviate painful symptoms.
