FAQ

The Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Illnesses are best known for the plethora of symptoms that they cause, and mesothelioma brings a variety of symptoms, some of which are common, some vary by type. There are a number of general symptoms of mesothelioma; it’s known to cause lumps, excruciating pain, and weight loss. Mesothelioma most commonly hits the lining of the lungs, where it’s called Pleural Mesothelioma, and usually causes breathlessness, painful coughing, and pain beneath the ribs. Mesothelioma can also affect the abdominal cavity, the genitals, and the heart, though these forms are quite rare in comparison.

While there are several different known forms of mesothelioma, some with their own unique symptoms, there are some common symptoms that unite all forms of this malignant cancer. The first common symptom is the appearance of lumps, usually beneath the skin in the afflicted area. These lumps commonly are accompanied by varying degrees of pain, depending on where they are in the body. Lastly, most forms of late-stage mesothelioma can be accompanied by otherwise unexplained episodes of weight loss. While some mesothelioma symptoms are universal, there are others that are specific to the type of mesothelioma a person suffers from, the most common of which is pleural mesothelioma.

The most common form of mesothelioma afflicts the pleura, that is, the lining that surrounds the lungs, and comes with distinctive symptoms. As the tumors of pleural mesothelioma grow around the lung, they can cause painful coughing for some. The pressure of pleural mesothelioma can also lead to a feeling that many describe as breathlessness, or feeling constantly very short of breath. Pleural mesothelioma’s final unique symptom is intense pain felt beneath the rib cage. It’s worth noting that pleural mesothelioma also shares the general symptoms described previously, such as pain, weight loss and lumps.

Pleural mesothelioma may be the most common type, but it's not the only variety, and they have their own, distinct symptoms. Peritoneal or abdominal mesothelioma can include swelling of the abdomen, along with lumps, pain and weight loss like in other varieties. Pericardial mesothelioma, that is, mesothelioma of the heart, could also lead to chest pain, shortness of breath, along with the general symptoms. Other forms of mesothelioma are fairly rare, so their symptoms aren't very well known yet, although they should share some general symptoms, such as pain and unexplained weight loss.

If illnesses are defined by their symptoms, mesothelioma has a definition that varies quite a bit based on type. While this article explored  general symptoms of mesothelioma, such as pain, weight loss, and lumps, there are also specific symptoms that vary by type, such as the breathlessness of pleural mesothelioma. This article cannot cover every symptom in detail, but should be enough of an overview for general familiarity.
