FAQ

How Do Doctors Treat Mesothelioma?
Once a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma has been made, various factors will need to be considered for treatment.
•    The location and type of the disease
•    The stage of the disease
•    The overall health of the patient
Pleural mesothelioma destroys the lining protecting the lungs, and is seen in three-fourths of all cases. This form also has the most treatment options available. Surgery is usually the first choice of doctors, and if caught early enough, the surgery can dramatically improve life expectancy. Chemotherapy offers a second treatment option that can increase the success of treatment, especially when used in conjunction with another treatment option, such as surgery. Radiation is only minimally effective and can’t be used easily in this part of the body.
Peritoneal mesothelioma destroys the protective membrane of the abdomen and it is seen in approximately one-fifth of cases. Surgery is also usually the treatment option with the largest success rate, and occasionally chemotherapy can be used. Radiation is not a viable option for this part of the body because it poses too many risks for the sensitive organs nearby.
Pericardial mesothelioma is rare and difficult to treat well. Surgery is sometimes used to alleviate symptoms, but radiation is not a consideration. Testicular mesothelioma is rarer still and treatment options are very limited, usually to surgery and radiation. Surgery can range from aspiration to relieve swelling to the complete surgical removal of a testicle.
The staging of mesothelioma is based on a universally accepted method known as TNM.
•    T represents the size and location of the tumor.
•    N represents the inclusion or exclusion of the lymph nodes.
•    M represents the degree (if any) of the metastasizing of the cancer.
Once the cancer has reached stages III or IV (based on I through IV), treatment becomes more to reduce painful symptoms than to pursue cancer removal. Mesothelioma, however, is known as a cancer that does not show symptoms until the disease has reached later stages, making treatment even more challenging.
The patient’s overall health prior to the diagnosis plays a role in the treatment options available and the prognosis as well. Most diagnoses are made in people over the age of 60 years, but the younger the patient is, the better the options usually are. Mesothelioma has a latency period averaging between 20 and 50 years, making early diagnosis difficult.  Research has shown that people with lower levels of exposure to asbestos are more likely to live more years symptom-free when compared with those who were exposed at high levels over a short period of time.
