FAQ

Mesothelioma History

Before modern medicine and the scientific method, many illnesses were difficult to diagnose or understand fully. Asbestos has been mined since at least ancient Greece for various properties, while it's link to asbestos has only been known since the 20th century. This article looks at possible cases of mesothelioma reaching back to ancient times, with a greater focus on the discovery of tumors that were eventually named mesothelioma, the discovery of the cause, and it's impact. This article doesn't go into detail about mesothelioma symptoms, prognosis, or treatment.

Prior to the 20th Century, there was no diagnosis for mesothelioma, medicine was less advanced, however there are possible examples. Asbestos has been used since ancient times for the properties it has, especially it's resistance to flame. Ancient Greece and Rome saw the beginning of asbestos mining, so it could stand to reason that if asbestos is a primary cause of mesothelioma, there would have been cases. Pliny, a Roman philosopher, described asbestos miners coming down with an eventually fatal illness that could have been mesothelioma, but there's no way of verifying these accounts with physical evidence.

Mesothelioma as a diagnosis grew from research into tumors found in the pleura, lining around the lungs, leading from discovery in the 18th century to healthy debate in the 19th, and diagnosis in the early 20th. Tumors in the lining around the lungs, or the pleura, were discovered in 1767 by a French doctor by the name of Joseph Lieutaud. The 19th Century saw increased debate about the nature of these tumors while asbestos grew in popularity as an insulator for the Industrial Revolution. After a century of debate, doctors in 1909 coined the term Mesothelioma to refer to the cancers that grew in the mesothelium, or lining of the lungs and abdomen, leading to diagnostic criteria in 1931.

Once mesothelioma had a name and a diagnosis, change became more rapid, beginning with looking at the cause. Steven Gloyne, a pathologist in London, was the first to posit a link between asbestos exposure and the development of mesothelioma. Studies were made over the next few decades, but the most important for determining the link between asbestos and mesothelioma came out of research done in South Africa from 1948 to 1960 when a paper was published. The paper showed a damning link, where 32 out of 33 patients with the illness had been exposed. These studies led to prevention efforts, including outright bans of asbestos in many countries.

The history of mesothelioma is a testament to how difficult it is to find until it's too late. Asbestos mining has been around since Ancient Greece, but the link between it and a formally diagnosed illness were not known until the 20th century. This article provided a brief history of mesothelioma and it's discovery, but is an overview, and cannot reasonably tell the whole story, or give a voice to all those lives lost over the centuries.
