FAQ

Mesothelioma: The Prognosis

Prognosis refers to knowledge of the future, and is used to refer to the likely outcomes of medical conditions and illnesses. This article focuses on the prognosis for mesothelioma, which is a malignant cancer affecting the lining of the lungs. First, the general prognosis, which is fairly grim, is examined. This is followed by a brief discussion of stages of mesothelioma and the benefits of early detection. Lastly, many patients with mesothelioma have a fairly poor prognosis, so this article briefly discusses ways of handling less than happy news about the future.
Mesothelioma is a complex illness that generally has a poor prognosis, however due to it's complexity, there are some exceptions to that rule. In general, a person who is diagnosed with mesothelioma can expect to live between 4 and 18 more months. This seems incredibly short, and is deceptive, because mesothelioma actually grows very slowly in the body. It's very difficult to detect until later stages, but the occasional early detection may account for part of the 5-10% of people that end up surviving at least five years after their diagnosis. It's the early stages that are the easiest to treat.
The stage at which mesothelioma is caught is important for a patient's prognosis, because it determines the spread of the illness, and determines the difficulty of operating. In early stages, 1 and 2, mesothelioma is almost impossible to detect because it doesn't usually cause much in the way of telling symptoms. Later stages, symptoms jump from being barely present to debilitating, and can severely impact a patient's quality of life. In later stages, mesothelioma will have metastasized, meaning that the tumors will have grown and jumped into other areas, making operations to remove them too risky or difficult.
For the majority of mesothelioma sufferers, the prognosis is fairly grim; dealing with such dark news can be difficult, and takes support, grieving and introspection. Patients can find support in their family, friends, church or in cancer support groups. Patients, and their friends and family may start grieving before they die, and having support around can be incredibly helpful for this process. It may even be beneficial to see a therapist or chaplain in periods of self-grief. Lastly, patients with support, and having gone through some grief, can turn inwards, learning to accept their prognosis.
For the time being, the prognosis for most mesothelioma patients is fairly grim. There's a small group of people who survive past expectations, but not most. Finding it in early stages is helpful, but as of right now that isn't reliably done, due to the way symptoms don't show up until metastasis has occured. So, many patients will need to brace for a dark prognosis, through support.
