FAQ

Mesothelioma: Factors that Affect Prognosis
Malignant mesothelioma strikes approximately 2,000-3,000 people each year in America with serious effects on major organs of the body. Pleural mesothelioma affects the protective membrane (mesothelium) that surrounds the lungs and is the most prevalent form of the disease, accounting for nearly three-fourths of cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common form of the disease, accounting for up to one-fifth of all cases. The two rarest forms of the disease, pericardial (affecting the heart) and testicular (affecting the testes), make up the rest of the cases.

History of asbestos exposure
One of the most significant contributing factors for the prognosis of mesothelioma is the level of prior asbestos (the cause of this cancer) exposure. The longer a person was exposed, and the higher the levels at which the exposure occurred, the more detrimental the affects tend to be.

General health and personal status
Those younger than 55 years of age, without other health concerns, and with no history of smoking tend to have more favorable outcomes. This population is then able to withstand the rigors of treatments such as chemotherapy, further improving their odds. Females also tend to have slightly better prognoses which are thought to be a result of estrogen levels affecting the tumor growth.

The location of the disease
The type of mesothelioma does appear to affect the prognosis for the patient to some extent. Those with pleural mesothelioma have a slightly higher long-term survival rate. However, the size and spread of the disease at the point of diagnosis has a larger impact than the specific type.

The stage of the disease
As is the case with most cancers, the staging of the disease greatly influences the prognosis. Those with stages I and II tend to have more treatment options available, therefore making their prognoses more favorable than those in stages III or IV. When patients present more advanced or multiple symptoms, the outcome is also generally less favorable.

What is the overall prognosis for mesothelioma?
Once all of the contributing factors have been taken into account, the overall life expectancy for someone with mesothelioma is 1 year from the time of diagnosis. However, those with the most favorable factors (youth, health, limited exposure to asbestos, etc.), can have a life expectancy of more than 5 years. Likewise, however, those with fewer positive factors can have less than a year. Just as with many diseases, the earlier the disease is detected, the better the outlook is. Even though there is no cure for this cancer, there are treatment options available to help reduce the severity and improve life expectancy.
