FAQ

Mesothelioma of the Heart or Genitals, Rare But Deadly

Most organs in the human body have some kind of lining, and mesothelioma can strike at the linings of any organ, especially around the lungs or abdomen. However, in very rare cases it ends up afflicting the lining of the genitals, or the heart. This article provides a basic overview of what mesothelioma is, and what sort of symptoms manifest when it affects the lining of the genitals or the heart. This is followed by outcomes, the general prognosis for mesothelioma, with more specifics for pericardial mesothelioma. Lastly, the relative frequency of these afflictions amongst men and women is discussed in brief.

To get started, a basic understanding of mesothelioma of the heart and genitals, aka mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis, or pericardial mesothelioma, is required. Mesothelioma of the heart or genitals are uncommon forms of the malignant cancer mesothelioma, which strikes the mesothelium, lining around organs and body systems. There are common symptoms, including weight loss, lumps, swelling and pain in the affected area; and genital mesothelioma is rare enough that these are the only well known symptoms for it. For pericardial mesthelioma, patients might see a heart murmur, trouble breathing, fatigue, odd heart rhythm, or other symptoms that look like heart disease, in addition to common mesothelioma symptoms.

Uncommon as they are, the prognosis for either mesothelioma of the heart or the genitals is similar to the prognosis for the more common types, such as pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma. For all forms of mesothelioma, the general prognosis is fairly grim due to the late stages at which it's normally detected, with many patients only surviving 4-16 months post-diagnosis. A bit more than half of patients with pericardial mesothelioma pass away within 6 months of diagnosis, however if the symptoms are discovered early outcomes can be better. Treatments exist, such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, which can be effective in some cases, but once the cancer has spread, they become less and less effective.

It's worth comparing these less common forms of mesothelioma against the relative frequency of pleural mesothelioma, which makes up 90% of male cases, and 74% of female cases. Amongst men, mesothelioma of the genitals makes up about 7/10 of one percent of all mesothelioma cases, a small fraction of the pleural cases. Women suffer about double the relative frequency of genital mesothelioma, making up about 1.5 % of all their cases. Mesothelioma of the heart effects men and women differently, following the trend of greater relative frequency for women, with 1.6% of female cases affecting the heart, and 4/10 of a percent of male cases.

As this article showed, mesothelioma doesn't just effect the lungs or abdomen, it can also effect the genitals or the heart. These cases are rare, but just as if not more deadly than other forms of mesothelioma. Pericardial mesothelioma makes a good example of how mesothelioma can be deadly due to the symptoms sneaking up on a patient, appearing at first to be heart disease, and not getting noticed until too late.
