FAQ

What is the Prognosis with Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a cancer arising in the mesothelium, the protective membrane that surrounds the lungs, abdomen, heart, or testes. Each year in the United States more than 2,000 new cases are reported, and while these numbers might not seem high, the long-term life expectancies are of probably the greatest concern.

There are several factors that influence the outcomes and prognoses of the disease.

•    Age, gender, and overall health – Younger patients (those under 55 years) with no prior health risks are associated with more positive prognoses, in part because they can be healthy enough to withstand the rigors of treatment options such as chemotherapy. Those who smoke are at increased risks for poorer prognoses. Males also have a higher rate of poorer outlooks, which is thought to be related to the fact that female patients have estrogen genes which may affect the tumors.
•    History of asbestos exposure – The higher the levels of asbestos and the longer the duration of exposure, the higher the risks for more severe disease. The period of latency can extend from 20 to 50 years from time of exposure to time of diagnosis.
•    The severity of symptoms – When more than one symptom is present or a single symptom is debilitating (such as a constant cough or continuous chest pain), the outcome is generally less positive and life expectancy can be reduced.
•    The type of mesothelioma – Pleural mesothelioma has statistically higher rates of 5-year survival at 10 percent. This is the most favorable the various types of the disease. Also, once the mesothelioma has metastasized it can be very difficult to treat and prognosis is usually poor.
•    The cell type of the mesothelioma – Beyond the locations in the body where the cancer can be found, there are different cell types of the cancer. Each cell type carries its own specific risks.
•    The stage of the mesothelioma – Those with stage I or II typically have more favorable prognoses, and those with stage III or IV will often be less favorable. Treatment options are more limited in the later stages of the disease.

As with many cancers, early detection is the best way to improve chances of treating the cancer before it spreads to other locations within the body. When not considering the above specific factors on an individual basis, the overall survival rate for those diagnosed with mesothelioma tends to be approximately one year. However, this does not mean that there are not treatment options available that can extend life expectancies and improve qualities of life. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and certain drug therapies can reduce or remove tumors and improve the quality of life.
