FAQ

Mesothelioma of the lungs: Pleural Mesothelioma

Everyone knows what it feels like to be out of breath after running up flights of stairs, but imagine always feeling breathless. Pleural mesothelioma, a malignant cancer that affects the mesothelium, or lining around the lungs, can cause that sort of breathlessness, along with many other symptoms. Treatment for pleural mesothelioma includes surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, alternative medicines and some results of clinical trials. Mesothelioma comes in several types, with pleural mesothelioma being the most common, linked to asbestos exposure.

Pleural mesothelioma is by far the most common variety of mesothelioma, and is caused by a cancer afflicting the lining around the lungs. There are several other varieties of mesothelioma, all of which are caused by an uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells in the linings of organs. The cause of any cancer is complex, and usually has a mix of genetic and environmental causes. The best known environmental risk factor for pleural mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers, usually in the building trades. A relatively short exposure of 1-3 months is all that is necessary for some individuals. On the other hand, there are many people who have worked with asbestos for decades without coming down with mesothelioma symptoms.

The pleura is a membrane, or lining, that surrounds the lungs inside the chest cavity, and is what is affected by pleural mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is a malignant cancer, meaning that abnormal cell growth occurs on the lining of the lungs. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are partially a result of this pressure on the lungs. Some patients will experience pain while breathing, while others may notice a feeling of breathlessness. Other symptoms may include feeling lumps around the chest, and unexplained weight loss. Luckily, there are treatments available to reduce the severity of these symptoms.

Treatment for pleural mesothelioma comes in a number of forms. First, surgery can be used to try to remove the cancer from the body, possibly with the help of chemotherapy or radiation. Surgery can also be used to lighten some symptoms of pleural mesothelioma, possibly by removing tissue pressing on the lungs, or draining built up fluid to make breathing easier. There are alternative medicinal routes that can soothe symptoms of pleural mesothelioma as well, including breathing exercises and acupuncture. Alternative medicine hasn't been proven to be able to cure mesothelioma, but the symptoms can be soothed. Lastly, clinical trials exist which may grant access to cutting edge drugs and interventions.

Mesothelioma comes in a variety of forms, but pleural mesothelioma is by far the most common, and this article covered it's causes, symptoms and treatments.
