FAQ

What is Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma isn't the most common ailment, but there is a public image of it, and that image is usually an older middle-aged man, coughing. From that image, mesothelioma would appear to be a lung ailment, but in reality, it's an affliction of the mesothelium, which refers to the lining around various internal organs. Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer which is strongly connected to asbestos fibers. This article provides a general overview of these topics to give a good picture of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is named for the mesothelium, the lining that it afflicts within the human body. The mesothelium is a lining around an organ or body system, and could be thought of as a system of protecting various organs, in some cases like the abdomen, there will be mesothelium within other mesothelium. Mesothelioma most commonly affects the pleura, which is the lining around the lungs, leading to symptoms that look a little bit like lung cancer. Other body systems have their own mesothelium which can be afflicted, including the abdomen, heart, and genitals.

Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer which afflicts the mesothelium described above, and like most cancers, it gets worse over time. Malignant cancer involves uncontrolled growth of cancer cells, and in the case of mesothelioma, the growth can be very slow at first. As the cancer develops, it goes from being contained and small, barely causing symptoms, to much larger, more dangerous and far harder to operate on. In mesothelioma, the cancer becomes most dangerous once it's spread and begun showing more symptoms, including excruciating pain, weight loss, terrible coughing, swelling, and a feeling of breathlessness.

Unlike some cancers, the cause of mesothelioma is well known and fairly easy to control for, though the same cannot be said about it's treatments, which are harsh, and sometimes ineffective. Asbestos is the only known cause of malignant mesothelioma, though even prolonged exposure won't lead to mesothelioma in the short term, the illness usually takes up to ten years to grow. Treatment for mesothelioma is comprised of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, and is most effective when caught early.  The majority of cases don't have a positive outcome, and most patients only live from 4-18 months after their diagnosis due to the spread of their cancer.

As this article has illustrated, mesothelioma is an unusual and dangerous cancer of the mesothelium, the lining of various organs. This article addressed what the mesothelium is, along with how mesothelioma acts as a cancer, it's cause, treatments and prognosis. The cause, asbestos was only touched on briefly, but is very important, because it provides a useful tool for prevention.
