FAQ

Mesothelioma:Metastasis

The prognosis for many cancers becomes grim once it has spread from it's point of origin into lymph nodes and other distant parts of the body. This process is called metastasis, and frequently occurs in mesothelioma before a diagnosis can be made. This article looks at the way in which mesothelioma spreads over it's stages, and the increasingly grim prognosis brought on by further metastasis. It begins with an overview of mesothelioma and metastasis, moving to mesothelioma staging, ending with a discussion of early detection.

Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer, characterized in later stages by the process of metastasis, where cancer spreads, causing symptoms throughout the body. Mesothelioma is a cancer affecting the linings of various organs, causing symptoms like breathlessness, pain, swelling and bowel problems. Malignant cancers are known for metastasis, a process wherein cancer cells spread beyond the local area where they began, causing problems throughout the body. Through this process, mesothelioma can move throughout the body, forming  new tumors which may form new tumors of their own, making treatment difficult, and prognosis grim.

Mesothelioma that has metastasized represents stages 2 through 4, and comes with a fairly grim prognosis. In stage 2 mesothelioma, the cancer has begun to metastasize, leaving it's original site to spread into the local area, patients diagnosed with this stage have a median survival time of 16 months. In stage 3, metastasis has become advanced, and treatment becomes even more difficult as the cancer spreads, perhaps to the chest wall or heart. The final stage of mesothelioma tends to include advanced metastasis, possibly spreading to  distant parts of the body, causing severe symptoms and carrying a life expectancy of about 6 months on average.

When mesothelioma is detected early, or in the rare cases that it is actually benign, patients have better outcomes, however this detection is incredibly rare. Benign mesothelioma is fairly rare, but does occur occasionally, leading to a cyst or growth within the mesothelium, it can grow, but doesn't spread, so with treatment, prognosis is good. In malignant mesothelioma, the first stage is very difficult to detect, however when it is, the prognosis tends to be much better than later stages, with a median of 35 months survival time. In early stage mesothelioma, symptoms will be barely noticable, meaning that for most people, they won't suspect they have cancer until it has metastasized, causing debilitating symptoms.

The spread of cancer comes with growing risk of death for it's patients. This article looked specifically at mesothelioma and how the process called metastasis occurs, leading to greater spread of cancer and increased risk of patient death. It also looks briefly at the benefits of catching mesothelioma before metastasis in terms of survival time.
