FAQ

Risk Factors and Causes of Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma – an aggressive cancer that predominantly affects the protective lining of the lungs or abdomen – is caused by exposure to the mineral asbestos. When microscopic particles of asbestos are inhaled or ingested it can decades later result in this uncommon form of cancer.

Where does asbestos come from?

In the 20th century industries found the benefits of products produced with the component of the mineral asbestos. Asbestos is a flexible and durable mineral that has been coveted for its properties of insulation and even as fireproofing material. Asbestos mines boomed in the 1900s century as the industrial age grew and the benefits of asbestos were discovered. People working in professions that exposed them to asbestos have not just been miners and chemical plant workers. They are firefighters, automotive workers, veterans, and even homeowners doing renovations. People could also be exposed to asbestos through:

•    Living in a community where there is an asbestos mine
•    Working in construction
•    Working in demolition
•    Working in shipyards
•    Living with someone who works with asbestos – secondary exposure can happen when the particles are transferred from one person to the next

In 1964 the link between asbestos and mesothelioma was discovered. This, however, did not end all asbestos use or remove it from the environment, as it is a naturally occurring mineral. Researchers believe that it takes repeated exposures or short durations of exposures at very intense levels in order to impact developing mesothelioma. Males are four times as likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma as compared to females, and females tend to have a longer latency period by about five years. The prognosis of the disease depends in large part on the type of mesothelioma, the stage of it was first found, and the overall health of the individual. Because so many people who are diagnosed with the disease are older than age 55, it can make distinguishing symptoms of mesothelioma and symptoms of other health issues that arise with older age quite difficult.

What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

The symptoms will depend on the type of the disease: pleural (within the membrane that surrounds the lungs), peritoneal (within the membranes of the abdomen), pericardial (within the membrane of the heart), or testicular (in the membrane surrounding the testes).

•    Cough, chest discomfort and pain, and shortness of breath are common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.
•    Swelling, back pain, abdominal tenderness, and nausea are all common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma.
•    Pericardial mesothelioma can present with chest discomfort and an irregular heartbeat.
•    Testicular mesothelioma has few documented symptoms other than swelling in the scrotum or lumps on the testes.

Early detection is essential for the best outcomes, and will provide patients with the most beneficial treatments.
