FAQ

What are the Symptoms of Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a cancer that occurs in the protective membrane that surrounds either the lungs or abdomen, and rarely the heart or testes. These membranes, also known as mesothelia, are responsible for providing lubrication which allows for the organs to expand and contract, and is necessary for internal functions within the body.
Of these four primary organs that can be affected by mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma (pertaining to the lungs) is the most common and accounts for approximately three-fourths of the cases. Second to that is peritoneal mesothelioma (pertaining to the abdomen), which accounts for approximately 10 to 20 percent of all cases. Of the approximately 3,000 cases diagnosed each year in the United States, pericardial and testicular mesothelioma are the rarest.

The Symptoms
The symptoms a patient will experience depend upon the specific type of disease that is present. Pleural mesothelioma most often presents with symptoms that have to do with the respiratory system. Patients will often begin with episodes of dyspnea, or shortness of breath, as their chest has a reduced ability to expand and contract as needed. These symptoms often also result in chest pain and a dry, wheezy type of cough, and very faint unusual breath sounds can sometimes be heard. As the disease progresses the patient can experience pleural effusions, which are buildups of fluid on the lungs, as well as pleural plaques, which are benign lesions that appear on the membrane surface.

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining that surrounds the abdomen, and thus the symptoms can be different when compared to pleural mesothelioma. Often the first sign of this disease is abdominal pain, which can either be accompanied or soon followed by an enlargement of the abdomen (attributed to either tumor growth or fluid retention). Appetite loss is another key symptom, which can then result in weight loss. Those with this disease can also suffer from what are known as ascites – areas of fluid retention that occur between the peritoneum and abdominal regions. Abdominal hernias and bowel obstructions are also common, especially as the disease progresses into late or final stages.

The two least common forms of this disease are the pericardial and testicular types. Pericardial mesothelioma usually results in symptoms such as chest pain and breathing difficulties as the lining surrounding the heart becomes too thick to work well. Testicular mesothelioma has even fewer noticeable symptoms, especially at the onset of the disease. A lump or swelling in the testicular region is often the prevailing symptom that causes a patient to seek a diagnosis.
