FAQ

What Are the Symptoms of Mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer which affects the membrane surrounding the lungs, abdomen, heart, or testicles. The membrane, also known as the mesothelium, provides a lubricant to the organ which allows for expanding and contracting internal movements. When cancer occurs in the mesothelium, it restricts the ability of the organ to function properly. Of the more than 2,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States, there are four main types of mesothelioma, and each type has its own range of symptoms.
The period of latency for this disease often ranges from 20 to 50 years from the point of exposure to the diagnosis. Each of the four main types of mesothelioma have extended periods of latency, but pleural mesothelioma has been known to present in the shorter time frame (but still within the typical range).

Pleural Mesothelioma
The most common form of the disease, pleural mesothelioma affects the membrane which surrounds the lungs. Most of the symptoms that affect people with this form of the disease are centered around the respiratory system. People who have mesothelioma often present  symptoms such as:

•    A shortness of breath, also known as dyspnea
•    A reduction in the ability of the chest to expand and contract with breathing
•    Pain in the chest
•    Consistent coughing, which is typically dry or similar to asthmatic wheezing
•    Unusual breathing sounds
•    Weight loss
•    Pleural effusions, which are instances of fluid on the lungs, and which also result in some of the same symptoms as listed above
•    Pleural plaques, which are benign lesions typically up to 6 cm in diameter, located on the surface of the membrane (and found on images used for diagnostic testing)

Peritoneal Mesothelioma
The second most common type of mesothelioma affects the peritoneal membrane which surrounds the abdomen, and accounts for approximately 10%-20% of cases. The symptoms of this type of the disease can be quite different from those of pleural malignant mesothelioma.

•    Pain in the abdomen (often the first sign)
•    Enlargement of the abdomen
•    Tenderness of the abdomen
•    A buildup of fluids between the organs of the abdomen and peritoneum, known as ascites (these are common in many cases, but often occur in later states of the disease)
•    Weight loss, often attributed to a loss of appetite
•    Abdominal hernias
•    Bowel obstructions (during late stages of the disease)

Pericardial Mesothelioma
The symptoms of this uncommon form of mesothelioma generally include chest pain and difficulty breathing easily. These symptoms are the results of thickening of the membrane walls that surround the heart.

Testicular Mesothelioma
This form of mesothelioma is very rare, and the only prevailing symptoms appear to be lumps located in the testes or swelling in the general area. This can lead to late or missed diagnoses.
