FAQ

What is Malignant Mesothelioma?

Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer that grows within the membrane that surrounds organs such as the lungs, abdomen, heart, or testicles. Even though it is not considered a prevalent cancer, every year in the United States an average of 2,500 – 3,000 new patients are diagnosed with the disease.

Four Types of Mesothelioma
Malignant mesothelioma can be subdivided into four main occurrences. The most common of these is pleural mesothelioma which affects the membrane that surrounds the cavity of the lungs. Up to three-fourths of the cases of the disease are diagnosed as pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma, the next most common form, attacks the protective membrane of abdomen. Pericardial mesothelioma that affects the heart lining and testicular mesothelioma that affects the testicles are the least common forms of the disease.

These malignancies occur on a membrane which is known as the mesothelium, the lining that is responsible for lubrication that allows the organs to expand and contract. These sometimes unperceived internal movements cannot happen easily without a properly functioning membrane.

While there are occasionally diagnoses of benign tumors within the mesothelium, most often the tumors are malignant in nature and can be quite aggressive. There is currently no cure for mesothelioma, but there are treatment options available such as radiation and surgery that can improve life expectancy and alleviate symptoms. The disease is usually diagnosed through needle biopsies, but other studies such as imaging maybe required.

The Link Between Asbestos and Mesothelioma
During the 20th century researchers and scientists discovered the correlation between malignant mesothelioma and exposure to asbestos. The microscopic particles that make up the minerals of asbestos are used most often in industrial settings, including construction, demolition, automotive repair, and even the military, particularly the Navy. Exposure most often occurs when the particles are inhaled, but there are also instances of secondary exposure where even children of adults who work in these fields are exposed as the particles are transferred through things like clothing.

One of the largest challenges with diagnosing mesothelioma is the latency period that exists. From the time of exposure to the time of diagnosis it is usually between 20 and 50 years. Those who are exposed to higher concentrations of asbestos for longer periods of time can experience shorter periods of latency, but even in extremely severe cases of exposure symptoms usually don’t appear for a minimum of 5-10 years. This extended latency period of the disease can mean that an accurate diagnosis can be delayed, and many cases of mesothelioma are formally diagnosed during the later stages of the disease.
